With autumn brings a great opportunity to enhance your landscaping by planting new trees. But, it is essential you choose the right trees for your landscape. Trees can work wonders for both home and business landscapes alike but it’s important to invest in trees that will last and work well with your unique landscape and climate. There are two different ways to purchase trees; container grown or field grown. As the expert landscape design company for Lancaster, we would like to tell you more about the best way to incorporate new trees into your fall landscape.
Why local, field grown trees?
Field grown tees are used to similar soil types like that found in your Pennsylvania lawn.
Field grown trees are usually the best choice to ensure success in planting. Shade, flowering, and ever-green trees which are grown in the ground and then dug, balled and burlapped are extremely successful for the local homeowner. These trees won’t dry out as quickly as container grown trees because they have a better root system which in time ensures stability in order to anchor tree canopy.
Field grown trees also have far less tendency to be plagued with circling or densely matted roots which are a common problem in container grown trees.
Unsure of which trees to choose for your unique landscaping?
The experts at Root’s Nurseries can help. We can show you how shade trees in the proper location soften the harsh lines of a building, how evergreen trees provide year round privacy and how certain flowering trees can add the perfect splash of color to your landscaping.
One of the best parts of living in Pennsylvania is the fall foliage! So be sure to incorporate some of your very own into your landscaping. Here at Root’s Nurseries, we are the area tree experts with over a 100 acres of trees. Shade, flowering and evergreen. Fall is time to dig and plant these trees. Here’s why:
Selecting trees locally grown ensures hardiness of plants because the field grown tree is acclimated to local weather conditions including rainfall, snow, cold and hot extremes.

Central Pennsylvania Landscaping Tips
Warm weather is finally here in Pennsylvania! Have you begin preparing your Millersville landscaping? The experts here at Root’s Nurseries would like to offer some pro tips for you to keep in mind for your lawn and landscaping. We are a local landscaping company, we grow our own trees here in Central Pennsylvnia and are well versed in what grows best in our area. Help give your landscaping a great start by following these tips and then watch your landscaping come to life.
First, be sure to trim your plants to get the most out of them. Those that are dormant over the winter should be manicured so they look amazing once the weather begins to warm up.
Next, take a good look at how your flower beds are shaped. If they are all just straight lines, consider adding curves to the edges, or putting in boulders to help break up the flat lines.
Take a look at your plants trees and start applying some mulch to them. This helps your plants and trees retain water and keeps them warm during cool spells. If you aren’t sure what type of mulch is best for your yard’s needs, visit us to learn more.
Once the weather really begins to warm up which will be very soon you will want to start watering your home landscaping. The rule of thumb is to water deeply but only when your home landscaping really needs it.
Try shade trees. Large shade trees planted on the east, west, and northwest sides of your home create soothing shade from the hot summer sun and reduce summer air conditioning costs by up to3 5%. Maple trees are a great option and will be gorgeous come fall. Their root systems tend to be a bit shallower than other trees, so you should watch where you plant them.
And finally, plant some perennials. Perennials help stabilize ecosystems, like forests, and in that way, they help sustain wildlife. And thanks again to their deep roots, they don’t require as much fertilizer and water.
These are just a few of the great tips you can expect from one of our gardening professionals. So, when you’re ready to get started on your Pennsylvania landscaping, contact our landscaping company and we will get your projects underway!

Protect Your Landscaping from the Damaging Effects of Jack Frost
Have you implemented a plan to protect your lawn this winter? If not, the expert landscapers at Root’s Nurseries are here to help! As a trusted landscaper serving Strasburg and the surrounding areas, we are here to offer up some advice that can help you protect your lawn and landscaping this winter.
First, make sure you’ve planted some shrubs or trees that don’t go dormant in the winter. After all, you’ll want something to look at! Your Root’s landscaper can help you choose distinctive evergreens as well as perennials with large seedpods that bring interest when covered in snow.
Next, deadhead your perennials. Deadheading is a necessary task for your landscaping. A trimming of the dead, old growth needs to occur so that fresh, new growth for the upcoming spring months can occur. If you do not wish to handle this on your own, call or visit our landscaper to let us know.
Also, the pruning of trees on your property should be done at this time of year or at some point during the cooler months. Our landscaper can provide you with the right pruning to help your trees thrive now through spring and back into summer. Pruning takes the skilled hands and knowledgeable training of a professional landscaper that knows how to encourage plant life to best adapt to our local Pennsylvania climate. As a local landscaper, we know how to do so! We can even provide pruning that looks great too!
We can help you create a garden maze or dramatic outlines with hedges that will look impressive all year long.
Remember! Your lawn is in something of a state of hibernation during the winter months. So, it is important to remember that if you place anything with some weight on it on the property during several months of freeze and thaw, you will encounter a flattened grass presentation. This will set your lawn up to have its grass grow horizontally, or, even, not grow at all in the spring time, possibly killing the patch outright.
Root's Nurseries can enhance your outdoor living area with plantings for four season enjoyment. Are you looking for a professional landscaper in Strasburg? Call Root’s Nurseries at 717-898-0041, or you can contact us for a Free Estimate.

year is a great time to take care of lawn problems or ward off some issues before
they arise. After all, you don’t want to leave your lawn in a bad way heading

few tips to help you enhance the growth of your lawn through the rest of the
summer and into the fall:

- Keep the ground tidy around trees that bear fruit. Fallen fruit can eventually rot and invite disease.
- Start preparing for your raking routine. Have you been considering a compost pile? Now is the time to get one started! With the leaves ready to drop, you’ll soon have plenty to compost. Compost is amongst the greatest of all natural fertilizers in existence and you can easily add your landscaping waste into this.
- It will soon be prime time for planting and establishing new shrubs and trees as well as looking ahead with spring flowering bulbs. So plan ahead! Start shopping now for the best selection. The experts at our landscape company, Root’s Nurseries, can help you choose the perfect plants for your unique landscape and our unique climate. And remember, don’t plant too early or you bulbs may sprout early, only to be killed off by the first winter freeze.
- Plan your final mow. This particular mow will allow for you to drop those blades and cut a bit shorter that you otherwise would.
- Apply high-phosphorous fertilizer mix generously to your lawn. Utilizing this sort of fertilizer will encourage the growth of roots that will allow for green turf emerging much earlier in the Spring than otherwise it would.

Take Care of Your Trees and Weeds: Tips from a Professional Landscaper
The weather
is getting warmer! This time of year, everyone is busy sprucing up their homes
with some spring cleaning and a fresh coat of paint. But it’s important not to
neglect the outside of your home - your lawn! To enhance the look of your home
or business property, work with an expert landscaper at Root’s Nurseries and we
can set your property up with all sorts of new trees and shrubbery.
With a new
landscape also comes preventative care for your trees and weeds. And as a
trusted landscaper for Landisville, we thought we would take some time
to offer some basic lawn care tips. And if you have any questions about trees,
weeds or other landscaping needs feel free to visit our garden center and ask a
friendly Root’s landscaper for more expert advice.
All About Weeds
Did you
know that one single weed is capable of producing as many as 250,000 seeds?
These seeds can survive for a year or can lie in wait for decades. Other weed
types even have seeds that can come to your lawn by air or can even be brought
to a new location by your shoes. As such, you will want to be on top of the
very first weeds you encounter. Once you see one, we suggest
spraying with Round Up which kills the weed to the root. Simply pulling can
leave roots in the ground which means weeds will just come up again. A landscaper at Root’s Nurseries
can help you create a weed fighting regimen for your specific lawn.
Landscaper Tip! An empty patch of land will quickly
become filled with weeds if they are not pulled as soon as they begin sprouting.
Should you be a composter, take these weeds and add them to your compost heap
to kill the seeds. If not, contact our landscaper and we can assist you.
All About Trees
Trees need
just the right amount of water and moisture to thrive, but you can't assume
that your trees are getting all of the water they need whenever you water your
grass. Grass roots will compete with tree’s roots for that water. Most trees
need the soil to be moistened at least a foot to a foot and a half deep in
order for their roots to be able to get to the water.
Ask a Root’s
landscaper about the specific tree you just bought to know exactly how much
water to give it and how frequently it should get watered. You can check for
how moist the soil is by using a soil probe or by gently digging into the soil.
The type of mulch you get also depends on the type of tree you have. Young
trees need plenty of mulch. Aim to have three inches of mulch around the base
of your new tree at all times. Not sure what mulch to get or how mulch to buy?
Contact us and a landscaper can give you their expert advice.
Are you
ready to get more expert tips from our landscaper in Landisville? Call Root’s
Nurseries at 717-898-0041 or you can contact us
to get a Free Estimate.
