Summer Landscaping Tips

Summer has arrived in Central PA! While you're outside enjoying the warm weather, you can also spend more time enjoying and working on your landscape. This season is a good one for completing some of those landscaping projects you've been hoping to tackle, and also a good one for sitting outside, surrounding yourself with your hard work, and relaxing. We've put together a few summer landscaping tips for those who are ready to make some changes to their property.

Add more foilage. Flowering plants can be very visually appealing. Adding some to your yard can instantly upgrade the look and increase your curb appeal.

Fertilize your lawn. If you want your grass to grow to its potential, start up regular fertiziler treatments, and be sure your lawn is getting the right amount of water. Both will go a long way in making sure your lawn is healthy and beautiful.

Experiment with layouts. Not a big fan of traditional landscaping looks? Come up with some of your own ideas, test them out in smaller sections of your property, and if you like the way they look, expand them to include your entire landscape.

Finding a Good Lancaster Nursery

It's Spring, and if you're the green thumb type, you've probably been itching to dig around in the garden or flower bed. Before you jump in and get to work, however, you'll likely need to pick up some plants to fill out your landscape. But where do you get them? How do you find a good Lancaster nursery? Here are a few questions you should ask of yourself and of the nursery.

  • Is there good plant variety?
  • Is the staff good at what they do? Are they knowledgeable about their plants?
  • Are the plants at the nursery in good condition?
  • Do the employees help you find what you're looking for?
  • Are the prices reasonable?
When you take all of these things into consideration and start searching, you're bound to find Root's Nurseries, the Manheim-based nursery and landscaping company that those in the Lancaster area have trusted for over 100 years. Interested in learning more? Give us a call today at (717) 898-0041.

Landscaping Tip for Spring: Prune!

Spring officially arrived a little over a month ago, and we've been seeing signs of live from dormant plants and wildlife for a few weeks. If you're tasked with landscaping at your home, there are a number of different steps you can take to make sure your property is ready for the spring, but one of the most important things you can do is prune.

Pruning is the act of removing parts of a plant. Branches, buds, roots, or other areas are all fair game for removal. There are a few rules that should be adhered to when pruning. For instance, flowering plants should be pruned only after they've flowered. When pruning trees, prune only the branches that grow up or down, or cross over other branches. Plants should be pruned to their natural shape, if necessary.

Not comfortable handling such tasks on your own, or do you have a larger landscaping project that needs taken care of? Root's Nurseries is more than happy to help. Give us a call today at (717) 898-0041, or complete a free landscaping estimate request on our website.

A Treetop Office

An older form of natural art, called "arborsculpture," uses trees to create new and interesting works of art, or puts a tree-based spin on a traditional idea. In this example, someone transformed three hybrid Poplar trees into a treetop office area.

The trees were leveled off at a height of 15 feet.

A plywood floor was then bolted to the treetops.

A frame was built on top of the plywood floor to guide the growth of the tree branches.

Sod Sofas: Landscaping Works of Art

The Department of Agriculture at Cornell University has Sod Sofa creation down to a science.

Oh, you've never heard of a Sod Sofa? Well, it's exactly what it sounds like. Take a look.

By shaping soil in a particular way and planing grass or moss, you can put something together that eventually takes the shape of a sofa. The grass or moss becomes the upholstery, and on sunny days, you can have a seat or lay down on your sod sofa and read a book, or chat with friends.

Since 1895, Root's Nurseries has helped residents in Central Pennsylvania create their own works of art. If you have a landscaping dream that you'd like to have fulfilled, give us a call and tell us more about it. We'd love to help! Our number is (717) 898-0041, or you can get in touch by completing our FREE landscaping estimate form.
